Walking Beside You on a Path Toward Change

Therapy, Support, and Empowerment for all in Columbus and across the state of Ohio

Our Mission:

To ensure that every individual we work with feels safe, comfortable, understood, and empowered to make the changes necessary for the life they want.

You Are Welcome Here

The clients we work with come from all backgrounds.

They are struggling with a wide variety of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, overwhelming grief, or difficulties related to past trauma just to name a few.

Our team of therapists collectively have decades of training and experience in these clinical areas, but at Sequoia, we believe that what is even more important is our ability to connect and develop strong relationships with the clients we serve.

Strong therapeutic relationships are the cornerstone of good therapy and tend to lead to excellent clinical outcomes.

THERAPY SERVICES:

Individual Therapy

If you have never worked with a therapist before, individual therapy sessions are just like they sound. You and your therapist. These sessions typically last 50-60 minutes and normally take place every one or two weeks. Initially, time is spent getting to know one another and soon developing goals for your treatment. Once your goals have been established, the journey begins.

Couples and Family Counseling

This type of therapy provides a space for you and your partner or you and your family member(s) to discuss and navigate what is likely a very stressful moment in time. Maybe the goal is to strengthen relationships. Or, maybe it feels like the relationship is coming to an end. Or, maybe you just don’t know what to do. Let us help you figure out what comes next.

Depression

Depression can feel never-ending. Like you’re walking through mud. Or, just plain stuck.

As you may know, depression can be absolutely debilitating and in the most severe cases, even fatal. But, the good news is that depression is very treatable. Using warmth, compassion, and clinical expertise, we will work at your pace, not ours, to get you unstuck. This can usually be accomplished through developing new ways of thinking, enhanced self-care and coping techniques, and sometimes, when necessary, medication. Don’t worry. We can point you in the right direction for that, if you’re interested.

Depression
Anxiety

Anxiety

Anxiety looks different for everyone.

But, one thing that is for sure is that for those who struggle with anxiety, it can quickly become overwhelming and take over. Oftentimes this happens in the form of racing thoughts, assuming the worst possible outcome will occur, difficulty sleeping, physical symptoms, and on and on. We will help you get to know your anxiety on a deeper level and rather than fear it, learn how to manage it in an entirely new way.

TRAUMA (PTSD)

Trauma (PTSD)

Many of us have suffered a traumatic experience. Maybe it was a single event, or maybe the trauma you endured persisted for many years.

And while some people are able to successfully process and recover on their own, most of us need additional support. We know that trauma is stored in the body and even if many years have passed, that trauma can still show up and express itself when we least expect it. This happens in different ways but for many it presents itself in the form of anger, fear, overwhelming emotions, or an inability to form stable relationships. At Sequoia, we will help you learn about trauma and how it has affected you and we will guide you, with the right treatments, allowing you to feel renewed, restored, and healed.

Grief

Grief

Until you have experienced it, grief is hard to describe. Or, as Cathy likes to say - grief is a sneaky bitch.

One moment you’re fine and the next you’re sobbing in the checkout line at the grocery store or while you’re on your way to pick up the kids. You may be wondering when this feeling will end. Unfortunately, grief never does. At Sequoia we can help you get to know your grief in a different way, learn how to better anticipate its sneaky little visits, manage it in a healthy way, and learn how to continue in this new normal alongside it.

Motherhood/Perinatal

Perinatal Mental Health (Trying to Conceive, Pregnancy, Postpartum, Birth Trauma)

No matter what stage of this journey you are in or what your experience has been, we know that this is hard.

Maybe the path to motherhood has involved struggle or loss. Maybe, like many women, you simply feel overwhelmed by the demands of motherhood. We want to be the space where you can come bleary-eyed, covered in spit-up, and wearing your same sweats from two days ago. We are the space where it is ok to say out loud that maybe motherhood isn’t all you thought it was cracked up to be. Oh, and we also know that even leaving the house as a new mom is a monumental feat which is why we also offer telehealth services. Most people understand that being a new mom is challenging, to say the least. But that doesn’t mean you have to grin and bear it. Early identification of postpartum mental health concerns is crucial not only for you but for your baby and family as well. We are proud to have therapists at Sequoia specially trained to work with and support you along the way.

EMDR

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy is a highly sought after treatment that has traditionally been used to treat trauma symptoms and PTSD.

But now, we know that EMDR can be used to treat a wide variety of mental health issues outside of trauma. EMDR is a treatment that moves stored memories that have been stuck in a specific area of the brain. Your mind knows what it needs to do to heal and as EMDR clinicians we help to facilitate this process. Many years of study have shown that EMDR is a highly successful form of treatment. Clients who have successfully completed EMDR treatment have learned to develop a more adaptive way of understanding themselves and their experiences.

Life Transitions

Life Transitions

From the time we are little, most of us have created a story and imagined that our lives will look a certain way.

But sometimes, life doesn’t go according to plan. That career that you’ve dreamt of since you were a kid? It turns out that it’s not nearly as fulfilling as you thought it would be. Maybe you are recently separated or divorced and trying to figure out your new normal. Or, the moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived - the kids have flown the coop! But, the problem is that it’s not as great as you thought it might be and suddenly you don’t know what to do with yourself. Perhaps retirement has finally arrived but instead of it being a time to pursue all those things you’ve been putting off, you find yourself feeling lost. If you find yourself in one of these places or countless others and are not sure how to navigate the road ahead, come in and let’s talk about it.

First Responders

First Responders

First responders face unique challenges in their professional day-to-day that most of us can’t even begin to imagine.

Each shift requires that a first responder always be alert and aware to either de-escalate situations or, when necessary, react quickly in a way that keeps both the public and themselves safe. This heightened state can eventually take a toll on a first responder’s mental and physical health. It can also negatively impact relationships, lead to burnout, depression, anxiety, and in extreme cases PTSD. The good news is that with the right support, these negative impacts can be alleviated and even prevented when therapy is part of a regular wellness plan. Whether you are a member of law enforcement, a fire fighter, paramedic, EMT, or dispatcher Sequoia is here to offer support and effective treatment to help ensure healthy careers, relationships, and personal wellness.

LGBTQ+

LGBTQ+

At Sequoia, we are committed to providing our LGBTQ+ clients with affirming care, dignity, and respect.

We know that you are the expert on your own life and at Sequoia your sexuality along with gender expression and/or identity is trusted and not seen as something that needs to be fixed, solved, repaired, or simply tolerated. We believe that our job is to provide a space where you can authentically share your needs and be met by a therapist who is compassionate, understanding, and able to hold space for those emotional needs. Even if talking about gender and sexual identity isn’t a top priority, having a safe space to discuss the unique and personal challenges that our queer clients encounter on a regular basis can be tremendously therapeutic in and of itself.

Meet the Team

Our team at Sequoia is just the best.

We are varied and unique in our backgrounds, interests, and experiences. Some of us may have lived experiences with the same problems leading you to reach out for therapy. But, one thing we all have in common is a passion for connecting with others and we love nothing more than to see our clients get to where they want to be.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe that despite what may seem like insurmountable circumstances, every person has the capacity to heal and grow.

At Sequoia, our therapists help make this happen by being authentic, curious, and client-centered. We believe that above all else, a good relationship between client and therapist is the most essential ingredient to having a positive experience with therapy.
